THE PROJECT
Alzheimer’s disease is categorized as a public health priority given its increasing prevalence with age and the fact that the population mean age in Europe is expected to grow more and more. This disease, as other tautopathies, is associated to the neuronal tau protein. Such protein is responsible for intraneuronal aggregation which ends up in neurofibrillary degeneration and synaptic disfunction. Unfortunately, we lack of early diagnostics and disease-modifying treatments to improve the quality of life of patients and their relatives.
TAME project constitutes the first tau network in Europe and pursues a better understanding of tau-related diseases to developing safer, personalized and more effective diagnostic tools and treatments for them. The project will provide nanobodies, single domain antibody fragments, with the ability to recognize tau protein in its variety of forms. Combining nanobodies with high-end technologies is expected to give rise to new tools to diagnose the pathologies as well as to correlate them with the different tau forms. Last but not least, bio-engineered products for new therapeutic immune-approaches are envisioned.
This project will evolve in the context of a Doctoral Network, training a multidisciplinary new generation of young scientists prepared to hold research and innovation in the field of Molecular Neurosciences.
